Lessons from building a Persian written corpus: Peykare
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper addresses some of the issues learned during the course of building a written language resource (called ‘Peykare’) for contemporary Persian. After defining five linguistic varieties and 24 different registers based on these linguistic varieties, we collected the texts for Peykare to do a linguistic analysis, including cross-register differences. For tokenization of Persian, we have proposed a descriptive generalization to normalize orthographic variations existing in texts. To annotate Peykare, we have used EAGLES guidelines, having tag hierarchies as a result. For the methodology used in annotation of Peykare, we had a semi-automatic approach. Special attention was also given to the Ezafe construction and homographs which cause difficulties in text analyses.

A Persian Part-Of-Speech Tagger Based on Morphological Analysis
This paper describes a method based on morphological analysis of words for a Persian Part-Of-Speech (POS) tagging system. This is a main part of a process for expanding a large Persian corpus called Peyekare (or Textual Corpus of Persian Language). Peykare is arranged into two parts: annotated and unannotated parts. We use the annotated part in order to create an automatic morphological analyze...
متن کاملBuilding and Incorporating Language Models for Persian Continuous Speech Recognition Systems
In this paper building statistical language models for Persian language using a corpus and incorporating them in Persian continuous speech recognition (CSR) system are described. We used Persian Text Corpus for building the language models. First we preprocessed the texts of corpus by correcting the different orthography of words. Also, the number of POS tags was decreased by clustering POS tag...
متن کاملA Probabilistic Approach to Persian Ezafe Recognition
In this paper, we investigate the problem of Ezafe recognition in Persian language. Ezafe is an unstressed vowel that is usually not written, but is intelligently recognized and pronounced by human. Ezafe marker can be placed into noun phrases, adjective phrases and some prepositional phrases linking the head and modifiers. Ezafe recognition in Persian is indeed a homograph disambiguation probl...
متن کاملFeasibility of Automatically Bootstrapping a Persian WordNet
In this paper we describe a proof-of-concept for the bootstrapping of a Persian WordNet. This effort was motivated by previous work done at Stanford University on bootstrapping an Arabic WordNet using a parallel corpus and an English WordNet. The principle of that work is based on the premise that paradigmatic relations are by nature deeply semantic, and as such, are likely to remain intact bet...
متن کاملImproved Language Modeling for English-Persian Statistical Machine Translation
As interaction between speakers of different languages continues to increase, the everpresent problem of language barriers must be overcome. For the same reason, automatic language translation (Machine Translation) has become an attractive area of research and development. Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) has been used for translation between many language pairs, the results of which have ...
